Ear plugs

At a glance

Specialist Hearing Services takes ear impressions for custom ear plugs at its Mount Hawthorn clinic in Perth, in partnership with Pacific Ears, an Australian manufacturer of custom hearing protection. There are plugs for loud work, music, sleep, swimming and shooting. Impressions go to Pacific Ears on the day, and the plugs usually arrive back at the clinic within 10 working days.

Pacific Ears

Types of custom plug

Pacific Ears makes its plugs in Australia and tests them to Australian standards.

Noise plugs

Pacific Ears' PACS Pro plugs take filters you can swap to change how much sound gets through. Depending on the filter, they reduce sound by about 10 to 31 decibels, and they are designed to keep speech clear. Higher-reduction models, such as the PACS Pro27, are made for mining, heavy industry and motorsport, and PACS Work plugs are made for industrial sites. Some options are certified to Class 5 under AS/NZS 1270, the Australian standard for hearing protectors.

Worth knowing

Loud noise over a long time gradually damages the hair cells in the inner ear, and that damage cannot be repaired. If you already have tinnitus, loud sound can make it worse.

As well as plugs for noise, music, swimming and sleep, Pacific Ears makes shooting protection, communication earpieces for work such as broadcasting, security and emergency services, and custom tips for everyday earbuds.

It depends on the filter or model. Pacific Ears' PACS Pro filters reduce sound by about 10 to 31 decibels, and some options are certified to Class 5 under AS/NZS 1270 for very noisy workplaces. The right level depends on the noise you are in, which we talk through at the appointment.
