What it is
How Lyric is worn

Most hearing aids sit behind the ear or at the entrance of the canal. Lyric goes deeper, into the canal itself, and stays there.

Between refits there are no batteries to change or charge, and nothing to take out at night. It stays in for months at a time while you sleep, shower, exercise and work.

Inside Lyric
How Lyric is built
Phonak builds Lyric as a single device with the battery sealed inside. When the battery runs down, we take the device out and fit a completely new one.
What's inside
From Phonak's Lyric 4 product information
- Microphone and sound processor. The microphone picks up sound around you, and the processor adjusts it to suit your hearing.
- Receiver. This is the tiny speaker. Phonak designs Lyric so the receiver sits about 4 mm from the eardrum.
- Battery. Phonak uses a zinc-air battery, a type that takes in air to make its power, and it contains no mercury.
- Two seals. Phonak fits one seal at the inner end of the device, nearer the eardrum, and one at the outer end.
- Handle and removal loop. We use the handle to place Lyric in the canal and the loop to take it out.
The MemBrain chip
Phonak designed the MemBrain chip for Lyric. Phonak says it processes sound in analogue, as one continuous signal rather than digital code, and uses very little power. Phonak says this low power use lets one device run for months at a time.
Sized to your ear canal
Phonak makes Lyric in seven sizes, from XXS to XXL. At the fitting we measure the length and width of your ear canal. That tells us which size you need and how deep the device should sit.
Why Lyric
Why Lyric's position matters
Lyric sits deeper in the canal than other hearing aids, which is why it cannot be seen and can stay in for months.
Designed to be invisible
Lyric is placed deep inside the ear canal rather than behind the ear or at its entrance, so it stays out of sight.
Worth knowing
Whether your ear canal suits Lyric is checked at the assessment.
Worn day and night
Lyric is designed to stay switched on and in place 24 hours a day. You wear it while you exercise, shower and sleep, with no charger and no batteries to change. It is water resistant, though not waterproof.
Worth knowing
It does not suit people who dive or skydive regularly.
Your outer ear still helps
Because Lyric sits deep in the canal, your outer ear still helps you tell where sounds come from.
Self-insertion for experienced wearers
Most refits are done in the clinic by a certified Lyric clinician. Wearers who are confident and experienced with Lyric can be trained to insert new devices themselves.
Worth knowing
Whether self-insertion suits you is discussed once you have worn Lyric for a while.

Tinnitus
Lyric and tinnitus
Some people find that tinnitus becomes less noticeable when they can hear more of the sounds around them.

Sound, day and night
Where amplification provides this benefit, Lyric may offer the additional advantage of continuous access to sound, day and night.

An assessment comes first
A tinnitus and hearing assessment is needed to determine whether Lyric is suitable and whether amplification is likely to help. Lyric is a hearing aid, not a guaranteed treatment for tinnitus.
