About cochlear implants

Cochlear implant assessment and aftercare

An assessment takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and the findings go to an ENT surgeon, who determines whether surgery is appropriate. After surgery, we provide sound-processor switch-on, programming and ongoing support.

Whether an implant suits you depends on your hearing and on any other medical conditions, and the assessment looks at both.

Who it is for

Cochlear implants are for severe to profound sensorineural loss (permanent loss from the inner ear) when a hearing aid no longer helps enough.

How it works

A cochlear implant bypasses the part of the cochlea, the hearing organ, that is not working. A thin strip of electrodes in the cochlea stimulates the hearing nerve directly. There are two parts: an internal implant placed under the skin above and behind the ear, and a sound processor worn on the ear or on the head.

A cochlear implant assessment usually takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and it is booked further ahead than other appointments. It is a fuller set of measurements than a standard hearing test, because the question is whether an implant would give you more than a hearing aid can.
